¿Qué son las etiquetas canónicas y URL canónicas?
También conocidas como rel=»canonical», las etiquetas canónicas son una manera de decirle a los motores de búsqueda que una URL específica es la copia maestra de una página. Te permiten especificar la URL canónica para una página. Pero, ¿cuál es la diferencia entre las etiquetas canónicas y las URL canónicas?

Una etiqueta canónica, que se encuentra en la sección <head> </head> del código fuente HTML de una página web, se ve así:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.website.com/page/" />
Estas etiquetas pueden ser autorreferenciales (donde una etiqueta canónica apunta a la propia URL de una página) o pueden hacer referencia a la URL de otra página para consolidar las señales.
A menudo, se observa que la terminología de las etiquetas y URL canónicas se usan indistintamente, cuando no debería ser así. Esto se debe simplemente a que el uso de la etiqueta rel=»canonical» es el método más utilizado para establecer URL canónicas. Sin embargo, no es el único método.
URL canónicas
Entonces, ¿qué es una URL canónica? Es aquella escogida como la URL «maestra» para un conjunto de páginas duplicadas. Para Google, una URL canónica es la URL de la página que Google considera la más representativa de un conjunto de páginas duplicadas en tu sitio web. Es posible indicar tu URL canónica preferida.

¿Por qué deberías emplear URL canónicas para el SEO?
Las URL canónicas te ayudan a lidiar con problemas de contenido duplicado que podrían afectar al rendimiento de tu sitio web. Pero, en particular, existe una serie de razones por las que deberías utilizarlas como un enfoque en un área técnica de SEO:
1. Especifica la URL que aparecerá en los resultados de búsqueda
Cuando estableces una URL canónica, estás dando la indicación de qué versión de una página debería mostrarse en las SERP.
Por ejemplo, ¿en cuál de los siguientes enlaces harías clic?
- https://www.domain.com/page-1/

Para evitar que las páginas duplicadas se posicionen en las SERP y garantizar que el contenido original sea el que clasifique, puedes emplear URL canónicas para consolidar las señales de posicionamiento.
4. Evita que Googlebot rastree páginas duplicadas
Si estás trabajando con un sitio web grande con muchas páginas, puedes usar URL canónicas para asegurarte de que Googlebot rastree tus páginas nuevas en lugar de, por ejemplo, las versiones duplicadas de las mismas en versiones móviles y de escritorio.

Proceso de la canonicalización

4 maneras de especificar páginas canónicas
Las etiquetas canónicas no son la única forma en que puedes especificar una URL canónica. Existen varias maneras de determinar qué páginas los motores de búsqueda deben considerar canónicas. Veamos las opciones principales para que puedas elegir la que mejor se adapte a tus necesidades.
1. Utiliza la etiqueta rel=canonical
La etiqueta rel=»canonical» es un fragmento de código sencillo que puedes agregar al código HTML de cualquier página, el cual dirige a los motores de búsqueda hacia la versión canónica. Digamos, por ejemplo, que tenemos tres páginas idénticas con las siguientes URL:
1) mystore.com/shop/white-sneakers
2) mystore.com/shop/product-id=1
3) mystore.com/shop/2019/white-sneakers
En este caso, tenemos una plataforma de comercio electrónico que genera varias URL para el mismo producto y queremos establecer la primera opción como la URL principal. Para hacerlo, necesitaremos añadir las etiquetas rel=»canonical» a las páginas 2 y 3, apuntando hacia la primera dirección.
Para añadir esas etiquetas, deberás abrir uno de los archivos HTML de la página y ubicar la sección <head> (en la parte superior del archivo). Luego, añade el siguiente fragmento entre las etiquetas <head> y </head>.

Ahora, guarda los cambios en el documento y repite el proceso con las otras páginas no canónicas. Este método puede llevar mucho tiempo, dependiendo de cuántas páginas canónicas quieras designar y cuántas URL duplicadas tengas.
Sin embargo, es simple desde una perspectiva técnica, y el código adicional apenas debería hacer una diferencia en el tamaño de archivo de tus documentos HTML.
2. Especifica las páginas canónicas utilizando encabezados HTTP
Si por algún motivo, no tienes acceso a las etiquetas <head> de una página o estás trabajando con archivos que no las tienen (como PDF), deberás usar un método diferente. En tales casos, es mejor emplear encabezados HTTP.
Este método requiere tener acceso al archivo .htaccess de tu sitio web. Por lo general, lo encontrarás dentro de la carpeta raíz de tu sitio web, lo que significa que tendrás que usar el protocolo de transferencia de archivos (FTP).
Una vez que tengas un cliente instalado, conéctate a tu sitio usando tus credenciales FTP, luego ubica y abre el archivo .htaccess:
Ya debería haber algún código dentro, el cual variará según la configuración de tu servidor. A menos que sepas lo que estás haciendo, no es recomendable modificar demasiado este archivo. En cambio, haz una copia por si acaso y, luego, añade el siguiente fragmento al final del archivo original:
<Files "example.pdf"> Header add Link "< http://mystore.com/shop/ >; rel=\"canonical\"" </Files>
Lo que hará este código es establecer example.pdf como la versión canónica del archivo. También, puedes repetir este proceso para otros tipos de archivos. Como no agrega un código a sus etiquetas <head>, no debería afectar el tamaño de los archivos.
3. Utiliza tu sitemap para especificar páginas canónicas
Los sitemaps o mapas del sitio son documentos relativamente sencillos que incluyen las URL de todas las páginas que conforman un sitio web. Puedes enviar un mapa del sitio a los motores de búsqueda si quieres asegurarte de que no pasen por alto ninguna de tus páginas.
Otra de las ventajas de utilizar un sitemap es que Google considera canónicas las URL que incluyes en él. Miremos una vez más las tres URL para un producto de comercio electrónico:
1) mystore.com/shop/white-sneakers
2) mystore.com/shop/product-id=1
3) mystore.com/shop/2019/white-sneakers
En lugar de añadir las etiquetas rel=»canonical» a las páginas 2 y 3, simplemente puedes incluir el primer enlace dentro de tu sitemap, dejando de lado el resto. Esto implica mucho menos trabajo que los otros métodos anteriores.
La desventaja de esta técnica es que Google considera esto como una sugerencia. Incluir un enlace en los resultados de tu mapa del sitio es una muy buena probabilidad de que el motor de búsqueda lo considere canónico.
No obstante, como el proceso es automatizado, pueden ocurrir errores. Por ende, es aconsejable combinar este método y las etiquetas rel=»canonical» para páginas especialmente importantes.
4. Usa redireccionamientos 301
Google afirma que puedes usar redireccionamientos 301 para especificar URL canónicas. Sin embargo, si usas redireccionamientos 301, solo existirá la URL canónica. Las otras versiones duplicadas te redirigirán a ella.
Por ello, esta técnica es la mejor manera de resolver problemas de contenido duplicado en:
- HTTP y HTTPS
- No-WWW y WWW
- Con slash al final de la URL y sin slash
Si se trata de una sola página, debes considerar este método con precaución y, por lo general, las etiquetas canónicas son la mejor solución a menos que puedas eliminar y redirigir una página con confianza.
URL canónicas defectuosas: problemas comunes
Hay muchos ejemplos de cómo una implementación rel=»canonical» incorrecta puede causar grandes problemas. Estos son los más importantes:
